about

June 2002, Pelkosenniemi (Lapland), Pyhätunturi, the pond of Pyhä kaste. A gorge cuts its way through the mighty countours of treeless mountains, with huge rocks scattered along its bed. A small brook is coaxing its sparkling waters along the gorge. At one point, the brook tumbles over a cliff edge, falling into a small pond underneath. On its banks, tall Lappish pines are like sentries, protecting the sacred peace of this spot. In the stillness of the pond, the water has a chance to lie in peace for a few minutes before being swept up into the brook, which disappears and then reappears beneath piles of jagged rocks. Willow Warbler, Brambling, Wren, Pied Wagtail, Common Cuckoo.
